Storing a car long-term can be a smart move, especially if you’re travelling, downsizing your parking space, or keeping a collector’s vehicle safe. However, one common question we hear at Annacis Lock-up Storage is: Do I need insurance if it’s in storage?
The short answer is: yes, you should keep some level of coverage. Here’s why.
Insurance Requirements for Cars in Storage
In British Columbia, basic auto insurance (ICBC liability) is required if your car will be driven on public roads. However, if your vehicle is in storage and not being driven, you don’t need to maintain full liability coverage. That said, most storage facilities, including ours, recommend or even require proof of some type of insurance to protect your car while it’s off the road.
Comprehensive vs. Liability Coverage
Liability Insurance: Covers damages you cause to others while driving. If your car is off the road and parked in storage, this isn’t necessary.
Comprehensive Insurance: Protects against theft, vandalism, fire, or weather damage. This is the coverage that makes sense while your car is stored. ICBC and private insurers both offer storage or “comprehensive-only” policies designed specifically for this situation.
Why Coverage Matters
Even when your vehicle is stored in a fenced and safeguarded storage facility or stored indoors, it can still face some risks. Theft, attempted break-ins, accidental damage, or even natural events like flooding can occur. Having comprehensive coverage means you’re protected financially if something unexpected happens. Without it, you’d be responsible for the full cost of repairs or replacement.
Do Storage Facilities Require Proof of Insurance?
Annacis Lock-Up Storage requires that all outdoor vehicles (including boats and RVs) maintain comprehensive and third-party liability insurance with a minimum coverage limit of $1 million.
Tips for Choosing the Right Coverage
- Ask about a storage policy: ICBC offers these at reduced rates since the vehicle isn’t being driven.
- Consider your vehicle’s value: For high-value or collector vehicles, more robust protection is worth the peace of mind.
- Check your storage contract: Each facility may have different requirements.
If you’re placing your vehicle in storage in our facility, you do need to keep comprehensive coverage regardless. It’s affordable, practical, and protects your investment against any risks like potential break-ins, theft, vandalism, and damage. So give yourself the peace of mind you deserve when you store your vehicle at Annacis Lock-Up. We’re here to help keep your vehicle safe and secure!
